Internet Shopping - Security Tips

Internet shopping can be a quick and convenient way to shop. You should however always be aware of security and follow the points set out below.

Ensure the company is reputable

Only buy from companies you know. If you are unfamiliar with the company ask around to see if anyone has ever heard of them. Check that they have a legitimate mailing address and preferably a landline telephone number for the company.

Ensure the website is secure

Look for signs of security on the website. Symbols like an unbroken lock or key and a URL that begins with 'https://' mean that no one but you and the merchant can view your payment information.

Keep a record of your transactions

Save and/or print the online confirmation of your orders.

Payment via email is not secure

You should never send payment information such as your Credit Card and CVC (Card Verification Number) number via email. Information that travels over the Internet as a regular email is not fully protected from being read by unauthorised parties.

Keep your personal information private

Never tell the merchant your ATM PIN or PAC Numbers. Your secret PIN and PAC should never be shared with anyone.

Register for MasterCard SecureCode or Verified by Visa

This is an added security feature provided by MasterCard and Visa. Click here for more information about MasterCard SecureCode or Verified by Visa
