We’ve set up the AIB ‘Add more green’ Fund in association with environmental partners, the Native Woodland Trust, the World Land Trust and Coillte, to enable us to make contributions on behalf of you, our customers, to environmental projects in Ireland and worldwide. We’re hoping that with the help of our customers, the Fund will grow and grow!
Under this project, every secondary school in the Republic of Ireland will be eligible to apply for a donation of 30 free native trees, to enable them plant a small native woodland on their school grounds. Schools will also be provided with a fully illustrated colour booklet produced by the Native Woodland Trust (NWT), which will give advice and information on how to choose the right location for planting the trees. This initiative when complete will provide a valuable wildlife habitat supporting much of Ireland's biodiversity. It will allow schools create an outdoor classroom which will provide children with an appreciation of the natural world. Coillte was set up in 1989 as a commercially focussed private limited company to manage Ireland’s State owned forests. Since then it has developed into a broadly based company operating in forestry and forest products.
In 2000 with the significance of the new millennium AIB worked with Coillte on the development of the People’s Millennium Forests project with the objective of replenishing Ireland’s native woodlands and managing them for the benefit of people and the environment. The World Land Trust is an international conservation charity, established in 1989, based in Suffolk, England. Since its foundation it has been working to preserve the world’s most biologically important and threatened lands, and has helped purchase and protect over 350,000 acres of habitats rich in wildlife, in Argentina, Belize, Ecuador, Brazil, Paraguay and the Philippines; and also in the UK. The WLT has a policy of working with local partner organisations and once the land is bought it is vested with the partners. The Trust then works with them to ensure long-term conservation and legal protection for the land. One of its patrons is leading conservationist Sir David Attenborough.
