Balancing risk and reward

The highs and lows of the world’s stockmarkets underline what every investor needs to know, namely that every investment carries some degree of risk. Some investors are more cautious than others.

However, you should be aware that, over the longer term, investment funds that involve a higher degree of risk can produce higher returns, but their performance can be volatile and past performance should not be regarded as a guide to future performance.

Investment funds carrying a lower degree of risk are more secure, but their returns are likely to be relatively modest – and their value could be eroded by inflation. So, you need to establish the degree of investment risk that you are willing to accept – so that you can select funds for a portfolio that are in line with your personal preferences.
