AIB Student Account for 2nd Level Students

The AIB Student Account gives you instant access and control over your money. It is designed to fit in with the way you live your life. You can use the account for your day-to-day needs and you can also use it to save some money for the future.

The benefits of the AIB Student Account include:

Banking Free of Maintenance and Transaction Fees*

AIB Banklink Card option

With an AIB Banklink Card you can withdraw money at up to 300,000 ATMs worldwide displaying the LINK and Visa PLUS symbols. Parental/ Guardian consent is required to order an AIB Banklink Card if the you are under 16 years of age.

AIB Debit Card option

The AIB Debit Card is a combined payment card, which operates with Chip & PIN technology. You can access your bank account to make purchases at Point of Sale and cash withdrawals at ATMs and Internet transactions.

All Student Account holders over the age of 16 years can apply for an AIB Debit Card without Parental consent. However, Parental/ Guardian consent is required for an AIB Debit Card if you are under 16 years of age.

With the AIB Debit Card you can do the following transactions:

POS

(Point of Sale)

  • Pay for goods and services wherever the Laser symbol is displayed in Ireland and the Maestro symbol abroad
  • Withdraw up to EUR100 cashback from the available account balance as part of your purchase transaction at selected retail outlets
  • Shop Online - limited to internet sites that display the Laser symbol.

ATM

  • Use your card for cash withdrawals from ATMs in Ireland and worldwide (up to a daily limit of EUR600) where the Banklink/LINK/Maestro symbol is displayed. The daily limit may be lower at certain ATMs.
  • Top up at any Meteor, O2 OR Vodafone mobile with 085, 086 and 087prefixes only
  • Change your PIN at most AIB Banklink ATMs.

AIB will pay the annual Government Stamp Duty on your AIB Banklink Card / AIB Debit Card **

  • AIB Banklink Card: Government stamp duty of EUR2.50 is charged annually in January on ATM cards
  • AIB Debit Card: Government stamp duty of EUR2.50 per card applies where the card is used for either an ATM/In Branch transaction or a Point of Sale transaction, and EUR5.00 per card applies where the card is used for both.

Commission-Free Foreign Exchange

There are no commission charges when you buy or sell foreign currency notes and you cash or lodge cheques/travellers cheques.

Interest paid on the balance in your account every 3 months

An AIB Student Account pays 1% more than the standard AIB demand deposit rate. For details of our current interest rates please refer to notices displayed at our branches.

Student Account statement

An AIB Student Account statement detailing lodgements, withdrawals and interest earned will be issued at least once a year.

AIB Mobile Top Up

There are four ways you can top up your mobile phone using your AIB Student Account.

You can

1. Use an AIB ATM.
2. Use AIB Phone Banking.
3. Use Top Up Online through AIB Internet Banking.
4. AIB Top Up by Text which allows you top up your mobile with a free text message, even if your phone is out of credit! ^

How do I open an AIB Student Account?

  • The AIB Student Account is available to students between the ages of 12 and 18 years and in receipt of part time or full time second level education in Ireland.
  • You will need to complete an account opening form and if you are under 16 years of age, this form, must be signed by a Parent/ Guardian. The Parent/ Guardian of the student must call into their local AIB branch, confirming their request for an AIB Debit Card on the account if the student is under 16 years of age. The Parent/ Guardian must be aware that they have no authority to amend the card details except for cancelling the card (if the student is under 16 years).
  • In order to comply with legislation to combat money laundering and Terrorist financing you will need to provide AIB with photo ID and proof of address or get a letter from your school on headed notepaper confirming your name, address and date of birth. If you cannot provide any of the above, please talk to us.

**Government Stamp Duty is payable annually in January in respect of your AIB Banklink or AIB Debit Card. All Customers holding an AIB Banklink or AIB Debit Card are liable for Government Stamp Duty which is paid by the Bank at debit of the Student Account. The Bank will pay this Government Stamp Duty for you annually from January 2008 while you are at second level education and hold an AIB Student Account. Once you leave second level education the Bank will no longer pay this Government Stamp Duty for you. The Bank may decide to discontinue paying the Government Stamp Duty for you but we will tell you at least one month in advance of doing so.

Student Account means a current account with the Bank opened (or converted) in the name of the Customer who is between the ages of 12 and 18 years and who is in receipt of part-time or full time second level education in Ireland. The Bank may at its discretion extend the benefits of Student Accounts to other customers.

Upon the Customer attaining the age of 18 years, unless the Bank agrees otherwise, the Bank may convert the Student Account to a personal current account.

The customer must be the beneficial owner of all funds lodged to the Student Account.

Parental/ Guardian consent is required for either the AIB Banklink or AIB Debit Card if the student is under 16 years of age. The Parent/ Guardian of the student must call into their local AIB branch, confirming their request for an AIB Debit card/ AIB Banklink card on the account.

The Parental/ Guardian have the authority to cancel the AIB Debit Card at anytime until the customer reaches 16 years of age. The card must be cancelled at the branch or written instruction to the branch. The Parental/ Guardian will have no authority to amendthe card details except for cancelling the card.
